She reminded me of Wotsit's daughter. But she was annoying and wouldn't
shut up. It was easy to find him: just scanned old newspapers for
a big winner, then on a test run went to the casino.

He'd won big-time and had elected to take it in cash, but was escorted
home by a small army.

But he had to leave it somewhere, so on other runs I'd tried to follow
the money, but always failed.

So what option was I left?

I had to get it out of him didn't I? He'd been a hard nut to crack.
Didn't seem to have cared how much pain I'd inflicted on her. Wouldn't
tell me where he'd moved the money.

But hadn't realized the significance of telling me where the money
had been moved FROM.
I heard gun-fire and then a muffled explosion from below, so I checked
outside to see if anyone else had heard, but no one seemed to notice.
ONE was daydreaming in the car about the Professor.

I thought about going down to see if they needed me, but I knew they
would emerge in a minute so I stood my ground and tried not to think
about when it would be my turn to take the bullet.
When they emerged I took FOUR and helped him out of the Office.

The surviving guards had followed us out and THREE was raving and
firing in all directions. The noise was deafening and I was shocked
by FOUR's wound. Even the big coat he was wearing couldn’t hide the
damage to his shoulder, which gaped through a jagged hole in the leather.
FOUR hobbled to the car and fell into the back.

THREE jumped in but never stopped firing. Every time he took another
guard out he laughed. ONE drove well and got us out of there fast.
FOUR was bleeding badly and screaming.
Blood was spattering everywhere.
A Patrol car picked up our trail and came roaring up behind us.
But their car was no match for ours in sheer speed on the long straights.
THREE emptied another few mags in their direction and they were long-gone.
Blood was everywhere. I told ONE to find somewhere to park up, and
then we prepared ourselves. Luckily FOUR had passed out, so the flow
had reduced to a trickle. We washed out hands as best we could with
the antiseptic wipes and then THREE found the severed artery and pulled
it into view.

I wound the thread around it, tightened and knotted it. A bit of colour
slowly returned to FOUR's cheeks.
Back at the Barn, I watched ONE disappear from the Machine and then
I sat in it myself. I placed my thumbs on the contacts and shuddered,
partly in anticipation and partly in dread at what was to befall me.

I was angry about the wound and knew it was serious. It would need
more than a fucking bandage, and he'd have to find some proper doctor,
not that quack that had tended me last time.
